I. Longuet-Higgins Anthony Arthur Longuet-Higgins, FRS (19 April 1891 – 28 December 1981) was an English geologist. He worked extensively in the Triassic Period (252–200 million years ago). He became famous for his investigations on the evolution of the earliest tetrapods. Biography Born in Wimbledon, London, Longuet-Higgins was the son of the zoologist and entomologist George Edward Longuet-Higgins. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He became a fellow of Trinity College in 1913, a lecturer in geology there in 1916 and a professor of geology in 1928. He took part in the First World War in the Royal Navy, and rose to the rank of commander. He did not, however, see active service, as he had been placed in a job as a map-maker and draughtsman in the Army Staff Department at the War Office. Longuet-Higgins carried out pioneer studies on Triassic limestones and was one of the first to recognise that geology was the key to the understanding of the Tertiary period. He was given the degree of Doctor of Science by Trinity College, Cambridge in 1921 for a dissertation on fossil plants, with the generic name of Hylocoön, and an unpublished doctoral thesis in 1926. He received a second doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1929 for an improvement on Hylocoön. Longuet-Higgins was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1931 and became secretary of the Geological Society in 1934. He was president of the Geological Society of London from 1943 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1948. He was also president of the Geologists' Association from 1935 to 1936 and in 1952. He died in 1981 in London. Works
